Cool and slimy

Nothing else so far besides the announcement!

Soon more to be revealed, likely on their Instagram.

Amakuni translates as "Heaven" from Japanese.

P.S. almost posted this in the DE subforum. ^^

Wondering if it will have a pivoting head or not. Been looking at the oneblade for while because I'm intrigued by the concept of a pivoting head. Very curious!

Yes, I too received their e-mail today.

I am typically not into SE razors, but the three guys (engineers) that founded Tatara have come up with clever designs and their razors are pricey, but top notch.

I’ll keep my eyes open for this one…

Personally I hope it won't be a pivoting tool as the lesser moving parts it has, the better. A basic 3 piece with excellent geometries and materials would be preferrable. Also, please let it be in an AC blade format.

The email I got had a teaser with its silhouette. It's hard to tell from that alone but it looked to me like an AC blade head.

I'm still new to the hobby. Can you elaborate? Why do you want less/no moving parts and what are the benefits of AC blades? I understand that they are thicker (which seems to be a good thing but I can't find a reason why) but find it hard to find the benefits compared to half De blades.

moving parts means more chances of malfunction or requires lubrication to work properly. the on thing i like about AC blades is they're thicker which reduces chatter greatly. an AC razor is just fun to have if you want to do more details work like shaving around goatees. the last longer compared to most DE blades too. having an AC razor is not crucial but its fun to have.

It's probably also worth noting that one the defining features of the more traditional razor designs we enjoy on this forum is that, in comparison to modern cartridge systems, they DON'T have any pivoting parts.

A big part of shaving with a traditional razor is that you learn to control the shave angle yourself - challenging at first, but capable of superior results once mastered.

Did anyone hear any more about this?

Anyone maybe got a copy of the e-mail they sent out? I never got one.

So it just had some information and a silhouette of the razor? Was there any estimated release date or anything?

I look forward to hearing more about it!

Thanks.

Amakuni - first Tatara single-edge razor (25)

"NEW Amakuni SE RAZOR
We'll tell you why

Amakuni Yasutsuna, an 8th-century Japanese swordsmith, is celebrated as the pioneer who revolutionized Japanese swordmaking. Before his innovations, Japanese swords were primarily double-edged (chokuto), straight blades inspired by Chinese designs. Widely used during the Kofun period (3rd–6th century), these swords served well for certain techniques but lacked the resilience and fluidity suited to Japan’s evolving combat style.

As the head swordsmith to the Emperor, Amakuni was known for his exceptional skill. After witnessing warriors return from battle with broken swords, he became determined to create a stronger, more resilient blade. With his son as his apprentice, Amakuni embarked on a meticulous study of steel, perfecting the techniques of folding and hardening to produce a blade that could endure the toughest of combats.

The result was the katana, the first single-edged longsword (tachi), a curved sword with a strong spine and razor-sharp edge. This unique design provided unmatched strength, precision, and resilience in battle. The katana quickly became the archetype of Japanese swords, embodying Amakuni’s commitment to craftsmanship and setting a standard for swordsmiths that would last generations. Amakuni’s legacy of innovation and perfection endures, with the katana remaining an iconic symbol of Japanese artistry and martial skill.

Today, in honour of Amakuni Yasutsuna, we proudly introduce the name of our first Artist Club Single-Edge Razor design, THE AMAKUNI.

Just as Amakuni’s katanas embodied strength, precision, and resilience, we crafted this razor with a fluid design to deliver strength, accuracy, and smoothness with every stroke."

It could very well be the most slippery handle produced by Tatara. Hope I’m wrong or that handle can be easily swapped for another with proper grip. It’s impossible to tell from teaser pictures.
